Great Wall Camping

This outing is the great highlight of our time in China so far. Over May 4th to 5th, we spent a short camping trip on the Great Wall at Jinshanling. This is not one of the better-known sections of wall, and in fact there are others that are said to be more scenic. The benefit of this area was isolation.

Tourists do come here, but generally they are just using it as a jumping off point for the popular hike to Simatai, a particularly dramatic section of wall. A fairly large group of hikers went up with us in the morning, but they all went east while we went west. For the rest of the day and night, we had a long stretch of unrestored ancient wall all to ourselves. We spent 24 hours in absolute solitude, which is very hard to do in China.

Our campground in an old watchtower. Me cooking dinner.

Allyne modelling Maoist fashions. John dumping the remnants of his soup on the "Mongol Hordes".

On the right, an exterior view of our campsite guard tower.

A 360 degree panorama that I cobbled together. My little camera isn't really suited to this, but it turned out okay. Click for a larger view.
